DP Seals has helped VIIG develop a colourful yet practical and robust fashion wallet

DP Seals gets
touchy feely
with VIIG

DP Seals has helped product design consultancy VIIG create a completely different wallet for today's fashionista.

Underpinning VIIG's product design philosophy is the drive to turn simplicity into an exquisite tactile and visual experience. Following detailed market analysis, the consultancy decided to bring the conventional wallet into the 21st century.

The concept was simple: two machined aluminium frames holding matched rubber mouldings with magnetic catches, hinged with a strip of rubber to form a clam shell. It was the design requirements of the mouldings, exceptional durability and a natural, skin-like tactile feel combined with the ability to take colour and aroma, that needed specialist input.

Much to VIIG's surprise, DP Seals suggested XNBR - carboxylated nitrile - for the mouldings, a material more at home in steel and wood industry applications than high fashion.

"Throughout the development process, DP Seals' input was invaluable. Their materials input, design feedback and production engineering knowledge has enabled us to bring a truly desireable product to market in about two months."
Stewart Morley, Director

XNBR’s exceptional tear resistance and flexibility offered the ideal solution for the hinge, fundamental to the wallet’s design simplicity. Similarly, the material’s natural feel combined with its resistance to abrasion and almost self-healing capacity to minor scratches met the demands for durability, tactility and quality. Further, DP Seals’ polymer knowledge demonstrated how the material could be pigmented to match almost any colour and infused with various scents. The current mouldings are made in a wide variety of colours - including purple, this fashion season's "in" colour - and lemon-scented.

DP Seals input went beyond material suggestions: initial VIIG designs were changed to make the final mouldings more effective in use as well as more easily manufactured.

VIIG has submitted a patent application on the final wallet design, reinforcing its objective to take existing products in completely new directions and into commercial reality.
